The series will include two virtual seminars of two hours each, focusing on Trauma Informed Practice. The series will explore how trauma impacts a young person’s capacity to engage, it will provide Youth Workers with a toolbox of strategies that can be implemented to create relationships and environments that are healing, regulating and rewarding.

By the end of the series Youth Workers will have the knowledge and skills needed to implement effective strategies that allow young people impacted by trauma to thrive.

These include;

  • Building relationships that are authentic and regulating to enhance a young person’s capacity to engage
  • Managing conflict with young people and rebuilding the relationship following a rupture
  • Providing young people with opportunities for control
  • Creating Consistent, Predictable and Reliable environments
  • Setting high expectations for young people
  • Implementing process praise
  • Trauma informed negotiations
  • The importance of evidencing progression and celebrating achievement
  • The power of celebrating vulnerability
  • Providing opportunities for young people to contribute
  • Providing opportunities for play

Participants will be provided with an e-manual that includes the theory and practical tools for implementing each of the strategies listed above.

Facilitator

The Trauma Informed Practice series will be facilitated by Perri Broadbent-Hogan. Perri is a teacher whose passion is ensuring young people have access to education regardless of their barriers. Perri has undergraduate degrees in science and education from La Trobe University and a Master of Education (Student Wellbeing) from the University of Melbourne. Perri has focussed her teaching career on ensuring young people are provided with biologically respectful learning opportunities within a trauma informed classroom setting, promoting maximal engagement for young people exposed to trauma. Perri has held Deputy Principal and Principal positions across Victoria and Tasmania, including Campus Principal of the largest registered specialist education secondary school in Australia. Perri has authored a book chapter on creating trauma informed classrooms and has written a unit for the Master of Teaching qualification at Victoria University focussing on trauma informed professional practice for teachers. Perri is truly passionate about being in a classroom supporting all young people to learn, and finds great joy in supporting other educators to do the same.

You will also be able to get a zoom link that will be active for one week after the training to do in your own time.
